Label Adhesive Formulations

Label adhesives are made from rubber based, acrylic, and modified acrylic formulations. Each type of adhesive has distinct adhesion features. The chart below shows these three label adhesive types and rates them on some of the more common features and characteristics of importance.

Rubber-Based Acrylic Modified Acrylic
Adhesion Medium to High Medium to High High
HSE Plastics Excellent Excellent Excellent
LSE Plastics Excellent Poor Moderate
Plasticizer Resistance Poor Good Moderate
Shear Medium to High Low Medium to High
Solvent Resistance Poor Medium to High Low to Moderate
Tack Medium to High Low to Moderate High
Temperature Resistance Low Medium to High Low to Moderate
UV Resistance Poor Good Poor

There are three points that make up an adhesive type:

  1. The process used to apply the adhesive (solvent, hot melt, emulsion)
  2. The adhesive material or formula (rubber, acrylic, modified acrylic, silicone)
  3. The type of adhesion (permanent or removable)

Label Adhesive Application Process

Different manufacturing processes are used to make pressure sensitive label adhesives.

Solvent - Adhesive ingredients are dissolved in solvent solution and applied to a web of material. After coating, the solvent dries leaving the adhesive

Hot Melt - Thermoplastic rubbers are formulated with tackifying resins, oil and antioxidants. The adhesive is coated onto a web of material at temperatures exceeding 300F.

Emulsion - Adhesive ingredients are emulsified in water, applied to a web of material and dried.
